Yes, I agree with the federation, children should be able to access their local school for free on the public transport system.

It may seem harsh but in the long run it is fair, if you live close then walk. remember we have a weight problem in society. There could be some case by case review if a child needs to travel to a school for special reasons. More important is the ongoing strikes by Australias highest paid teachers

This issue was reported in most of the media from an "us versus them"(public versus private) angle.
It has always been my strong belief that private schools should receive no public funding, as they tend to be vehicles for indoctrinating children in religion or promte elitism.
The withdrawl of total funding for free travel for students of private schools is welcomed in this household.
As for students of Public Schools, The system as it was was fair in most instances, however the distance from school/distance by road formula for High Schools students was flawed. In most new subdivisions, the road network is such that walking to school can be very long journey indeed.
