How to Start a P&C
Why Start a P&C?
P&C Associations give parents and carers a voice in their school, creating a space to raise ideas, concerns, and opportunities. They help build stronger connections between home and school, contribute to fundraising, events and programs, and support better outcomes for students. Even a small group can make a big difference.
You just need a few people to begin with.
At least 7 parents or citizens who are willing to hold a foundation meeting, with a shared interest in supporting your school, and be ready to elect 5 office bearers
That’s all it really takes to get started. No special skills or experience needed – just care and commitment.

5 Steps to Start a P&C
Whether you’re a parent, carer, community member or school staff member, we’ll walk you through how to start a P&C Association, and how we at the P&C Federation of NSW are here to support you.
It might sound like a big undertaking – but the truth is, it’s easier than you think!
Gather a Group
Talk with other parents, carers or community members. You only need 7 people to start. You can ask the school to help let families know you’re exploring the idea.
Hold Your First Meeting
Attendees pay a small membership fee. Elect your 5 office bearers: President, two Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer. Record the minutes of the meeting.
Send us the Meeting Minutes
Send the minutes to the P&C Federation and we’ll help to activate your membership, set up your public liability insurance, and guide you through what comes next.
Incorporate
Incorporation gives your members legal protection and helps with things like opening bank accounts. We’ll walk you through it. The process is simple and we have templates ready to go.
Get Registered
You can then apply for an ABN (Australian Business Number) and charity registration with the ACNC, to access tax benefits and concessions Again, we’ve got the links and help you’ll need.
