One of the special things about being part of an organisation that’s over a century old is the sense of legacy. Recently, we made room in our office for the Federation’s historical archives – boxes of old newsletters, handwritten notes, photos, and publications from the past. As we have been looking through them, we were reminded of the thousands of people who have shaped public education in NSW through their involvement in P&C Associations, volunteers from every walk of life who gave their time, their voice, and their energy to making schools better for children and communities. In reading through old conference programs, reports, and reflections, I was struck by how strong the sense of connection was. These weren’t just formal events; they were gatherings of people who knew they had something to offer and something to learn. There was joy and challenge, debate and celebration, but above all, participation.

One conference even came up with a slogan – Participate and Communicate. It feels just as relevant now as it did then. In 2025, we live in a very different world. We have email, group chats, and social media. It’s easier than ever to stay in touch – and yet, in many ways, it’s easier to feel disconnected too. Many of us are working hard within our own schools and communities, responding to local needs, managing the day-to-day. And while no two P&C Associations are the same, that’s exactly why it’s so valuable to come together. Not because we all do things the same way, but because we don’t.

As we look ahead to our Annual Conference later this year, we’re trying to return to that deeper idea that the conference is not something the Federation puts on, but something we all create together. A space where the knowledge in the room is just as important as what’s on the stage. A space where people who’ve never met can share stories and solutions, challenges and wins. Where your voices shape what comes next. This year, we’re encouraging every P&C Association, no matter how big or small, to consider coming. Whether you have one volunteer or a whole committee, whether you’re newly formed or have been active for decades, there is a place for you. It’s not about being representative of every other Association. It’s about bringing your own experience, and being open to others. We’ll be sharing more details in the months to come. But for now, I just want to plant the seed – this is your conference. The more people who see themselves as part of it, the more valuable and connected it will be. I hope you will consider not only attending, but participating and communicating too.
